regional ones, among there more than two hundred magazines which regularly publish statistic data. Modern statistics also operates figures and facts, final reports and other materials o f statistical researches. I t can examin executed experimental works, numerous reports, business-plans and feasibility reports; the recommendations and offers created for making practical decisions at different levels and in different branches o f national economy by the enterprises working in the country (more than 2,6 million enterprises are registered by the beginning o f 2000). A l l this information generalized and represented as some set o f statistical publications is an event itself each time. But nowadays these results can't be estimated as valuable ones for the national economy. The results o f statistical science which are necessary for the modem economic practice and the results, which are actually offered, sometimes don't even intersect. What our statistical science and practice has got what it offers is not the final product which is expected but only "raw material" which is used to make the final product taking into account the mentioned statements (i.e. good selection o f methods and competent data processing). I n the modern statistical science such a product is not used and that is why it is not produced, i t is like a project, which has to be organized, and firstly unit production and then batch production has to be adjusted. Hence it follows the interest and necessity o f progressive development o f works on generalization o f everything , what has been done in statistics, uniting all the collected data and transferring this data into final results, which can make statistics be stronger not only from the educational point o f view but also from the point o f view o f changing the reality and also changing the economic knowledge into workforce. That is a kind o f resource o f breaking into the economic and statistical science; such a break in can change the whole economic activity. I t is difficult to solve this problem but possible having such a potential i n economic and statistical science. A n d this is the third reason of publishing this encyclopedic index o f the Russian statistical publications. Foreign countries have got very good experience o f issuing encyclopedic indexes o f statistical publications. Here are some examples: famous English statistical dictionary o f Vebb (11 editions in X I X ) , statistical dictionary o f M . M u l h a l l , end X I X — b e g i n n i n g X X (6 editions) or bibliographic index o f P. Wasserman (976 encyclopedic pages, 21,5 thousand bibliographic units, including 8,5 thousand units of the American information sources) (7 editions in 1955-2000). Russia, which has a lot more statistical publications, has nothing o f the same kind in this sphere. Bear in mind that the number o f statistical data in Russia is 10s times greater than in the U S A and 100s times greater than in other countries. 1 1 Mulhall M. Statistical Dictionary.
