The work is commonly known today as simply “Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”. It is about a London lawyer who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, and the misanthropic Edward Hyde. The good Dr Jekyll invents a drug which transforms him into the evil Mr Hyde, along with an antidote which will return him to his better self. Ultimately, Mr Hyde is driven to murder, and when he is unable to make the antidote, he commits suicide. Jekyll and Hyde has come to refer to the “split personality”, the rare mental condition wherein within the same person there are at least two distinct personalities.
